Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
