Top TV Choices: Seven Essential Films In the Days Ahead

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique addresses the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out by her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying process titled this experimental method. This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features the talented actress as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take some time off from writing about international wars to embark on an opulent ship accompanied by an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, plus additional filthy rich passengers. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this nifty ghostly tale filmed completely from the viewpoint of the spirit. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's unconventional method is put to the test. This Saturday, evening, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well even without a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has rendered the children on edge. When Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, though the lead actress manages to depict the real-life figure with compassion. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's another release by the same director presents a espionage tale as tight as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to identify a traitor inside the organization out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
