Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
