EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
