Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
