The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
